Setup Instructions

This page contains instructions to setup local APIs on your device.

Please follow Accessing device settings for access to device settings, and then the instructions for your desired protocol.

Setup of local APIs is performed over the same web configuration page that is used to configure WiFi.

Press the button on your device. It will open a WiFi Hotspot named novolto-xxxxxx, where xxxxxx are the last six digits of the devices serial number. When the left LED pulses blue (water heaters) or the main LED is steadily blue (Sense), the hotspot is available.

Connect to the hotspot. In a web browser, navigate to http://192.168.2.1/expert. A warning dialog should appear. After reading and accepting, a list of the devices settings appears, where local APIs can be configured.

For local control, a different MQTT broker can be configured to replace the novolto MQTT broker. Alternatively, MQTT can be disabled to use Modbus only.

  • An MQTT broker and login credentials for the Heater to connect with are required.

If using HomeAssistant, the Mosquitto App offers an easy way to setup a broker.
Login credentials can be viewed and added at:
    Settings → Add-ons → Mosquitto Broker → Configuration → Logins

  • If using HomeAssistant Discovery, the HomeAssistant MQTT integration must be installed.

MQTT settings can be configured under the mqtt namespace.

Login credentials for the heater to login to the MQTT broker with are required.

In the devices web configration, configure the following settings:

Name Type Description
broker_uri String Address of the broker, including protocol and port.
For nonencrypted connections (typical for locally hosted MQTT brokers), the protocol should be “mqtt”, and the port is typically 1883.
For an encrypted connection, the protocol should be “mqtts”, and the port is typically 8883.
For example, when using a local broker under the IP address 192.168.1.10 and no encryption, use the address mqtt://192.168.1.10:1883.
Leave this setting empty to disable MQTT.
username String The username to login to the broker with
password String The username to login to the broker with
ha_discovery String Topic prefix to send homeassistant MQTT discovery message to.
If HomeAssistant (HA) is used, the device can send a discovery message to tell HA about the MQTT API so that the device automatically becomes available.
Unless changed in HA, this discovery prefix needs to be set to homeassistant.
Leave empty if not using HomeAssistant or if no discovery message is wanted.

Make sure to save the settings and reboot the device. The device should then connect to the new MQTT broker.

The Modbus API is disabled by default for security, as no authentication is required to access it.

In web configuration, turn on the setting enable setting in modbus namespace and restart the device.

For water heaters, if you are not using MQTT, make sure to disable the require_mqtt setting in the heating namespace, otherwise heating will be disabled with an error whenever MQTT is not connected.

Make sure to save the settings and reboot the device, the Modbus Server should be available afterwards.
